President’s Greeting 2019
With the ending of 2019 I am reflecting on the wonderful events we have had as “Gardeners on the Rocks.”
Our General Meetings have featured a variety of speakers who have brought us education, inspiration, and fresh ideas to make our home gardens more “us.” The informal question and answer period prior to the meeting gives members an opportunity to solve some of their problems and to share ideas with others.
The Field Trips were outstanding starting with the UC Davis Arboretum and then a bus trip in conjunction with the Association to Filoli Gardens. We enjoyed a stroll through a private rose garden in Roseville , and had a wonderful Ranger led guided tour of the Empire Mine and Gardens in Grass Valley. To wrap this all up, Golden Pond Water Gardens hosted a workshop on floating gardens where our members had a hands on creative experience.
Our Social Committee was busy too. “A Tisket, A Tasket” brought members to Turkey Creek for a lively and beautiful competition of May Baskets and a catered luncheon. In August the very popular Table Talk was held at the Sports Pavilion . Members rotated to four different subject tables and there was an opportunity for many exchanges of ideas. Our Octoberfest picnic held at the Sports Pavilion gave members another opportunity to socialize .
Spring brought us the Home Garden Tour and our main fund raiser Plant Sale. In these we really encourage community participation. This was a big year for our community of Sun City Lincoln Hills as they celebrated 20 years. Our group was represented in the Memory Book as well as having a free succulent potting table table at the Day of Celebration.
We showed off our gardening skills at the Rose Show and Bonsai Show both held at Orchard Creek Lodge.
Before each General Meeting we have an opportunity to visit the Brown Bag Table where members bring in their “extras” and purchase more treasures. This is a fun way to share.
Support of Civic activities is an important aspect of our group. This year included Lincoln High School Ag Program, Phoenix Continuation School, the Old Fruitvale School Community Center, our Twelve Bridges Library, the Salt Mine and Community Gardens.
All of these activities are due to the time and talents of our volunteers and our dedicated Steering Committee. Our membership increased this year because the word got out that we are an active & fun Group. Thank you one and all. I am looking forward to serving as your President for the next two years.
Have a wonderful & healthful Holiday and we will see you at the next General Meeting on January 23, 2020.
Sincerely yours, Marian Reeder
